DRR-Team organises workshops in Brazil concerning a tailing dam break early 2019

On January 25, 2019, in Brumadinho in the state of Minas Gerais a tailing dam (mining dam) from the Vale company broke. This led to an official request for DRR-Team made on July 29, 2019 by the National Mining Industry Agency (NMA) through the Federal Ministry of Mining and Energy of Minas Gerais, via the Embassy.

The DRR-Team mission is twofold: a fact-finding mission in October and facilitating two workshops. The first workshop started Monday November 25 in Belo Horizonte. Next to NMA the target audience were stakeholders like mining companies, IBRAM and inhabitants of the area. The workshop for the NMA Brasília starts today, Thursday November 28.

Part of the programme are amongst others the Dutch Approach to Risk Management and Dam Design, best practices in operations and decommissioning, and discussions in a round table setting. The Netherlands commission for environmental assessment (Commissie MER) is also present.

Keep a close eye on the DRR-Team website, where the mission report will be published. Additionally, a presentation on the outcome of the mission in The Netherlands for interested Dutch parties will be organised. More information on this event will follow.
